The new design upgrades the Town Hall while retaining its heritage. The Horticultural Hall has been demolished and will be replaced with a modern, flexible space for community, conference, event and exhibition use.
The facility will enable us to host events and conferences that will greatly boost the vibrancy of the central Hutt and play a big part in driving our local economy forward. The stimulus this will give to the central city will include flow-on effects to moteliers, restaurants and retailers, the creation of new jobs, and the boost to the economy in general.
Events Centre configuration
The Events Centre can be configured to suit your event. Examples of event configuration can be viewed below.
Where are we at?
There has been a lot of work on the interior of the Town Hall. A new wall is nearly complete: it’s been built about 100mm further away from the main Council building than the old wall to provide a seismic buffer between buildings.
Almost all of the necessary demolition is complete, with only one concrete floor slab remaining.
Apart from finishing the wall, preparation is being made for the reinstatement of the floor. A whole lot of other carpentry work is also happening in the space.
When you enter the Town Hall, you can already get an appreciation of how impressive the space will be when it is complete. Its heritage feel will provide a nice contrast to the new Foyer and Events Centre.
The work onsite has been moving west to east, so the Events Centre space and back of house space is a relatively recent bit of work.
The structural steel installation to the Events Centre is complete. The floor slab for the meeting rooms has been laid. These meeting rooms will have generous glazing and a lot of natural light.
Naylor Love was using the Horticultural Hall supper room as a site office, but that has now been demolished. Now that the view is clear, the full impact of the “glazed wall” on the southern side of the Events Centre can be seen. The space is going to be flooded with natural light, and it’s going feel very connected to the Garden.
The Foyer (formerly known as the Atrium)
We installed the foyer structure some time ago: the roof installation will begin soon, and when you’re in the space you get a real sense of its width and height.
Preparation for underfloor services is being done now, so the heating and other ducting will be installed soon. Following that the stone tiles will be laid.
This foyer will provide a public link between Laings Rd and Riddiford Garden, as well as being available for Events Centre and Town Hall users as an additional event or breakout space.
Commercial kitchen and café space
The kitchen designer has just completed the kitchen and café details. The structural steel installation to these spaces is underway. Concrete pours have been completed. At this stage it is possible to appreciate the scale of these spaces.
Other work being done
While construction continues, we are detailing the audio and visual, furniture and equipment requirements. There’s a lot of work to do.
The construction of the Events Centre is scheduled to be complete in April 2018.
Following a period of training and testing, the aim is to open for business in May 2018.
