What is this project about?
In 2017 a review of traffic and parking activity, associated with the Saturday Riverbank Market, was completed. The findings showed that the northern entrance of the Riverbank Car Park, near Harvey Norman, was significantly busier than the southern entrance off Daly Street.
This traffic was creating a bottleneck by Melling and was causing safety, congestion and accessibility concerns.
A traffic management trial, designed to alleviate these concerns, begun at the end of January 2018. The trial introduced an entrance at the south end of the Riverbank Car Park at Daly Street. The north end at Rutherford Street was exit only. The trial was evaluated in May and the results found that it significantly improved the congestion and safety around the Riddiford roundabout and Melling interchange.
In May the traffic management was applied on a semi-permanent basis after council discussed multiple different options; including, moving the market, closing the market or introducing user-pays parking system to cover the annual traffic management costs.
Where are we at?
In June it was decided that a user-pays system would be introduced. Council approved a $2 hourly charge with a $4 all day maximum charge on Saturdays.
This charge is an extension of the weekly charges to use the Riverbank Car Park and is inclusive of the monthly pass.
The future of the Riverbank Market
The Riverbank Market is a fantastic and valuable asset to Lower Hutt and Hutt City Council are working to find the right balance between traffic management and customer satisfaction.
The next step is to evaluate possible new locations for the market as the Riverlink Promenade will be developed in the current location.
