Earthquake-risk and prone buildings

We're working to make existing buildings strong enough to withstand an earthquake. The earthquake-risk and -prone buildings policy helps owners identify the risk level and encourages them to strengthen their properties.

Earthquake-risk building register

A list of those buildings within Lower Hutt that were classified under the Building Act 1991 (and previous legislation) as requiring strengthening work to be undertaken, but such work has not yet been completed.

 Earthquake-prone building register

A list of those buildings within Lower Hutt that were classified under Section 124 of the Building Act 2004 as earthquake-prone. These require strengthening work to be completed by 2018.

This classification includes those buildings on the Earthquake-risk Building Register but they have been separated purely for administrative purposes.

Built Heritage Incentive Fund

Council may be able to assist with funding of any heritage buildings that require earthquake strengthening. Check out our Building Heritage Incentive fund page to see if you are eligible for such funding.
