By taking some simple steps, you can make sure you, your family, and your workplace are prepared for an emergency.

Getting prepared is easy

In an emergency situation, you need to be prepared to cope on your own for at least three days, or perhaps more, and to manage without services like water, power and gas, and communications.

You need to have:

  • A household and workplace plan so you know what to do if an emergency happens
  • Water, essential food and medical supplies for you and your family to cope for at least three days
  • A getaway kit of essential emergency and medical items if you need to evacuate

Torch radios and water containers

15 litre water containers and dynamo torch/radios are available for purchase at Hutt City Council, and Upper Hutt City Council. Torch radios cost $30.00 and water containers cost $15.00

Emergency status

Check the Hutt Valley emergency status.

Warning systems

Lower Hutt has a siren network which may be used in an emergency event. 
Late each year the sirens sound for two minutes. Residents are advised of this test via local media.

In an actual event the sirens will sound for a longer period of time,
(approximately 15-30 minutes). The sirens make a continuous wailing sound.

Radio commercials

Sign up for emergency text alerts

In an emergency, your main sources of official information will be radio stations and this website. On this site, you will need to check the current emergency status page.

Your business, school, community or neighbourhood group can join our emergency preparedness network, Readynet, for free. The web-based programme helps you create an emergency plan for your organisation. In an emergency, we’ll send alerts to you via text message and/or email. There is also the option of signing up to receive only the alerts.

You can register by emailing emergency management or by phoning the Hutt Valley Emergency Management Office on 04 570 6666. To register please supply your organisation's name, a contact person's name, their email address and a phone number . Please indicate whther you wish to use the emergency planning component of Readynet or just receive alerts.

If you are not assosicated with an organisation using Readynet, but you want to register to receive alerts, please supply your name, email address and cell phone number.

Civil defence centres

In a major event, it is your community that would open a civil defence centre. Go to a civil defence centre if you need help or information, or if you are able to offer assistance. There are sixty civil defence centres located across the Hutt Valley:
