Mortuary and/or funeral director registration

If you have an existing mortuary/funeral director business, or plan to start up a new business as a mortuary/funeral director, you need to register with us.

Before you make an application

Before you apply for a registration, you need to make sure you have a correct resource consent and a building consent for your business. Depending on your requirements, you may need us to inspect the premises before you make an application. We recommend that you get in touch with us first.

For new premises: check if the premises are consented

You will need to contact our resource consents team to ensure the business you are proposing is permitted in the location. There may be special requirements e.g. set operating hours and number of car parks, etc.

Check if your planned structural or plumbing changes require inspection – for new and existing premises

You will need to contact our building consents team if you are planning to make structural changes or intending to change how the building is used.

Get your trade waste sorted before you apply

Our trade waste team can help you assess and check to make sure whether you need consent to dispose your waste. The premises may also have specific trade waste requirements.

Make an application

While you prepare your application, you may need to speak to us about your requirements. Please get in touch to talk to us.

  1. When you are ready to make an application, you will need to fill in the following forms:
    New mortuary and/or funeral director
    Application for Registration (PDF 71kb)
Application for a New Premises Registration (PDF 44kb)
Transfer of existing mortuary and/or funeral director
Transfer of Existing Registration (PDF 44kb)
  2. Along with your application form make sure you submit the following:
Submit a floor plan of your new premises
The appropriate fee for your application. We will advise you of the correct amount prior to applying
Resource consents you may have received as part of this application
Code of Compliance certificate you may have received as part of this application
  3. Arrange an inspection with us. We will look at the cleanliness of the premises, ventilation and lighting, washing facilities, drainage and toilets, personal hygiene and clothing, disinfection procedures, storage of products and vermin/insect control

Once the application is processed, a Certificate of Registration will be sent to you.

Renewal of new mortuary and/or funeral director registration

To help you renew your existing registration, each year we will send out an invoice and application form already filled in. Please make any changes necessary to the application form, sign the form, and return it with the appropriate fee. A new Certificate of Registration will be sent to you when we have received your application form and fee.

 How long will it take?

Please ask us how long it is likely to take to process your application, as this can vary depending on your situation and requirements.

 How much does it cost?

Costs will vary between different types of registrations. Our costs are available to be viewed on the fees and charges page.

We are required to levy an establishment fee for new premises, because setting up new premises may involve more inspection visits.
