Over weight and over dimensional vehicles

If you have a non-standard vehicle, for example one that’s heavier or larger than most, you may need to get special permission to drive it on our roads.

Over weight vehicles

Overweight loads are trucks or transportation devices that exceed the maximum permitted weights of vehicles on roads (Heavy Motor Vehicle Regulations 1974). You will need to apply for a permit to drive these vehicles on our roads.

Make an application

If you are planning to use state highway 2 along with our roads, you will need a permit from Land Transport Agency before you apply to us:

Apply for a permit with LTSA by filling in Transit Form 805C-5

For using our roads, either apply for:

A single use permit (PDF 71kb) or a continuous use permit (PDF 75kb) (12 months maximum)

Along with your application make sure you submit the following:

  • LTSA approval (if using state highway 2) or previous year’s permit or renewal of existing permit
  • A Vehicle Axle Index (VAI) from LTSA

Over dimensional vehicles

Over dimensional loads are trucks or transportation devices that exceed the maximum permitted dimensions of vehicles on roads. In general more than 3 metres wide, 4 metres high (refer Regulation 49, Traffic Regulations 1976).

Make an application

You can get a permit from LTSA or us where vehicle exceeds limits. We need at least one day notice.
