If English is your second language, you can find information here about taking an English course or using an interpretation or translation service.

Finding an English (ESOL) course near you

There are a number of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses run locally. These are designed for people who wish to learn or improve their English. You will need to contact ESOL Assessment and Access Specialist Service to complete English language assessment.

ESOL Assessment and Access Service

The ESOL Assessment and Access Service  provides people who have English language needs with advice and information about the ESOL programmes and courses that best suit their needs.

WelTec

WelTec caters for international students who need to learn English. You can visit their website  for more information.

WelTec also offers the Level 3 Certificate in English for Further Study programme to domestic students who are in receipt of the Refugee English Fund.  If you are interested in this programme please contact WelTec on 0800 WelTec (935 832).  

Naenae College

Naenae College has English language (ESOL) courses for adult students. There are two classes that run Monday - Friday during school terms. Students can enrol at any time during the year.

The morning class 9.30 - 11.30 is for people at post-beginner level. The afternoon class 12.30 - 2.30 is for people at elementary to pre-intermediate level.

The cost is $150 per term.  If you are a Work and Income client, ask your case manager if you can get help with fees.

English Language Partners Hutt

If English isn’t your first language, English Language Partners can help. The teachers are English speakers who have trained with English Language Partners.

The service provides a one hour lesson, once a week, in your home. The home tutor will visit you there. The tutors are volunteers who are interested in helping people settle into New Zealand and who want to learn about other cultures.

English Language Partners also run English Language Groups, ESOL Literacy Classes, Learner Drivers' Licence Classes and English for Employees Classes.

Finding interpretation and translation services

There are a number of interpretation and translation services available. Interpretation and translation can be done face-to-face, over the phone or by providing documentation to be translated.

Interpreting New Zealand – an interpretation service

Interpreting New Zealand provides interpreters face-to-face (onsite) and by telephone, depending on your requirements and physical location. Locations include many North Island and South Island regions, in addition to the wider Wellington area. Their services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays.The interpreters are usually native speakers of the languages they interpret. They also provide qualified NZ Sign Language interpreters for the deaf.

Interpreters' services are generally provided free to the non-English speaker by the organisation that makes the booking.

Language Line – a telephone interpreting service

Language Line is a telephone interpreting service funded by the government. It provides free interpretation services in 41 different languages. It helps you when you need to talk to government departments and agencies that take part in the scheme. These are called the "participating agencies".

The service is designed to be as user friendly as possible. Anyone wanting an interpreter simply visits or calls a participating agency. Within minutes, an interpreter is available on the telephone allowing the agency's official and the client to communicate efficiently and with confidentiality. Language Line also offers you the opportunity to choose the gender of the interpreter.

Translation Service - Te Putahi Whakawhiti Reo

The Translation Service operates within the Department of Internal Affairs. Their skilled translators can translate any type of document from and/or into over 70 languages. They offer a comprehensive range of translation services, specialising in technical, medical, legal, commercial and general documents.

New Zealand Translation Centre (NZTC)

NZTC is an international translation company located in Dixon Street, Wellington. The Centre provides translations of European and Asian languages.
