Compost bin offer

Are you considering growing your own vegetables, composting organic waste or living more sustainably? Now there’s extra incentive to get interested – a half-price composting bin.

Compost bin discount

People who sign up for any of council’s composting or sustainable living workshops, or who book a visit from the ‘green gardener’, before June 2013, qualify for a discounted bin.

Simply Makes Cents workshops start in February 2013, composting workshops in March 2013, and the free green gardener service is available year-round.

Environmental Sustainability Manager Jez Partridge says the workshops and the green gardener service are all part of council’s bid to encourage people to have a more sustainable lifestyle.

“We want to get fresh food growing, and composting happening in every garden in the city.”

Council’s green gardener service has proved popular with residents since it was launched in October. The green gardener has provided free advice on how to set up and maintain vege gardens and compost areas in more than 50 homes in the city.

Any resident who receives a green gardener visit before June 2013 will receive a discount voucher for a 250- or 340-litre compost bin, as will anyone who signs up for a composting or sustainable living workshop.

The voucher is redeemable at Mitre 10 Mega Petone for a compost bin (made in New Zealand from recycled plastic). Mitre 10 Mega Petone will also be helping out with 15% off a garden fork and compost activator.

Anyone interested in receiving a visit from the green gardener can contact council on 570 6666. If you’ve already had a visit, and would now like a voucher, contact us to arrange that.

Details about the upcoming composting and sustainable living workshops will be available on our website shortly.
