Eradicating, enforcing and educating
Our response to graffiti has three strands:
- eradicating graffiti with our rapid response removal service
- enforcing zero tolerance by working with Police to identifying serial taggers
- educating and encouraging pride in our community to own and manage the issue
We’re committed to building a strong sense of community, pride, safety and wellbeing. If tagging is left it creates a less desirable environment where other vandalism and more serious crimes such as burglary and assault may occur.
Rapid removal service
In July we kicked off a six month trial rapid response initiative to remove tagging immediately across the city to remove tagging from highly visible areas. We currently spend $500,000 annually on graffiti eradication and work.
Report graffiti vandalism as soon as you see it so we can remove it. Call the Police on 111 if you see people tagging. Don’t approach them.
Adopt-a-Spot programme
Volunteer groups of neighbours and community groups have adopted walkways and part of their neighbourhood to “paint-out” and remove tagging.
You too can join our adopt-a-spot volunteer programme.
Proposed Graffiti Removal Bill
A Hutt City Council (Graffiti Removal) Bill 2011 is being promoted as a local bill to Parliament as one strand in a city-wide strategy to get on top of graffiti vandalism.
