Project Silver Lining

A project to help local organisations minimise their waste going to landfill.

What’s this project about?

Almost a third of our city’s waste comes from local businesses. Project Silver Lining is an initiative to address this.

Research shows that while most organisations use simple waste minimisation solutions like cardboard recycling, it’s harder for them to find green solutions for many other diverse types of waste.

We have partnered with WelTec’s Centre for Smart Product to help local organisations find solutions that will:

  • Redesign products so that their waste can be significantly reduced or eliminated, or
  • Identify products into which particular waste streams can be incorporated

Projects currently underway

We are currently working with Earthlink to assist them with upcycling of pre-loved clothing to make children’s clothes.

In partnership with Weltec we are also investigating projects to reduce waste from businesses, such as options for setting up a food composting service.

How does the project work?

Weltec is contracted to undertake 12 Scoping Studies with local businesses to investigate waste reduction. Successful studies may lead onto a full investigation and finally implementation.

What’s the duration of the project?

The current contract with Weltec is for one year, and may be extended if successful.

Outcomes of the project for the community

The project will:

  • Reduce the volume of waste heading to landfill
  • Improve the efficiency of local organisations
