Taita Sports, Recreation and Community Centre

We’re developing a centre in Taita that will be a sports venue, a leisure and learning space and a hub for the local community.

We have received Resource Consent for this project.  The project will now begin to work on a more detailed design and fundraising efforts commenced in 2012.

What will the new centre feature?

The new centre will combine the Walter Nash Stadium, Taita Community Hall, Taita Community Library and Hutt Valley netball courts.

The centre will be a hub for community programmes, services and activities for the local area featuring:

  • 5 indoor multi-purpose courts
  • a new library (relocated from existing)
  • community meeting spaces
  • a community fitness centre
  • a cafe
  • up to 11 more courts outside
  • and space for up to 205 additional car parks for large events

The community library and meeting spaces will provide digital access for the community, host community learning, events and fitness programmes.

The centre will also be the home for Hutt Valley Netball and Basketball, and will also host a range of different sporting codes who are based primarily in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt.

It’ll also be an indoor and outdoor venue for events in the Hutt Valley, particularly age group events for court sports; but also community festivals and trade shows.

What’s the duration of the project?

We’ve committed $9m for the project across 2012 to 2014. Fundraising is currently underway to raise a further $3m.

The timing of the development is heavily dependant on fundraising efforts.  Council has planned its contribution over 2013/14/15.

What will the project achieve for the community?

The new library, community meeting spaces and indoor courts will enhance social, educational, sporting and retail opportunities in the city and immediate Taita community.

We’ll be able to host community festivals and trade shows to inspire and involve our community.

We’ll also benefit from more people participating in organised and informal sporting an recreation activities.
