What is in the Archives?

The archival collection contains the records of Hutt City Council and the authorities that preceded it prior to amalgamation in 1989, and go back as far as the 1850s.

This includes records created by the:

  • Lower Hutt City Council
  • Lower Hutt Borough Council
  • Eastbourne Borough Council
  • Petone Borough Council
  • Wainuiomata District Council
  • Hutt Valley Drainage Board
  • Hutt County Council

 

We also hold a number of private deposits from schools and local groups such as Petone College and the Country Women's Institute.

The archives holdings include property records, correspondence, subject files, minute books, rate books, land records, aerial photographs, maps and more...

 

Who can use the Archives?

The Archives can be used by anyone interested in the history of Hutt Citys people, places and events. Making an enquiry
You:

  • Contact the Archivist by letter, fax, phone or email.
  • Provide details of your enquiry and your contact details.

 

The Archivist:

  • Undertakes an initial search of databases, indexes, lists and archives.
  • Reports the results of the search to you.
  • Provides information and/or copies from archival sources as appropriate.
  • Arranges an appointment time for you to visit to view archives as appropriate.
    Your enquiry will be answered as quickly as possible, however the response time will depend on the availability of staff and the location of archives that relate to your request.
    In accordance with the Privacy Act and other legislation, access to some information is restricted and cannot be released.

The Reading room facility is available for research on a pre-arranged appointment basis only.

 

Services provided

  • Research enquiries can be made by letter, fax, phone or email.
  • A Reading room is available for visitors to undertake research at the Archive by appointment.
  • Copies of archives can be supplied at the Archivists discretion. This is dependent on copyright rules and the condition and format of the item. Charges Up to one hour of research time (for the first enquiry on a topic) will be answered free of charge.
    A fee of $25.00 (including GST) per half hour, or part thereof, for the balance of the enquiry will be payable in advance.
    Photocopying on A4 size paper will be free of charge for the first twenty pages and thereafter will be charged at 20 cents per page.
    A complete schedule of charges for the provision of information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 is contained in the Hutt City Council Annual Plan.
