Motutawa Avalon Park Playground Resurfacing

We're renewing the safety surfacing at Motutawa Avalon Park Playground to keep it safe, durable and enjoyable for everyone who visits.

Since opening in 2016, the playground has welcomed thousands of children and whānau. After years of use, parts of the safety surfacing have experienced normal wear and tear. Independent safety testing has identified areas that now need renewing, so the playground continues to meet required safety standards.

What’s happening?

Most of the poured rubber surfacing, wood chip areas and parts of the sand play area will be replaced. Some drainage improvements will also be made to reduce water pooling and improve the long-term performance of the new surfacing.

When complete, the playground will have refreshed colours and a more vibrant appearance while continuing to meet accessibility and safety requirements.

Construction timeline

Work will take place from 20 July to October 2026, depending on weather and site conditions.

The upgrade will take place in two stages, allowing parts of the playground to remain open where possible. Stage 1 of the works is outlined in yellow on the above site map, and Stage 2 is outlined in red.

Construction areas will be fenced and clearly signposted. There will be brief interruptions to path access while construction vehicles move through the area. Please follow any instructions from contractors onsite.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we complete these improvements.
