Manukura Awards

The Mayor of Lower Hutt's Manukura Award for Outstanding Service in the Community recognises and celebrates outstanding voluntary service in the community.

High schools in Lower Hutt are each invited to forward the name of one Year 13 student to receive an award which is presented to them by the Mayor.

The students, their whanau, principal, chairperson of the Board of trustees and their Deans are invited to the ceremony which is organised by the Mayor’s office in early December.

The meaning of Manukura is derived from nature and, in this instance, flocks of birds and the various characteristics that they portray. The term Manukura refers to the birds that are most treasured and sacred amongst their flocks , so, in this way it refers to a person held in high esteem and a leader amongst their people.
