Tips & tricks for a healthier home
A well-insulated home costs less to heat and cool, while tackling dampness and ventilation creates a dry, healthy home that holds in the heat.
- Ensure your home has insulation in place.
- Use energy-efficient, low-emissions heaters, such as heat pumps.
- Air your home regularly. Open doors and windows for 10-15 minutes each morning, or better, use a ventilation system.
- Dry washing outside or under a covered verandah or carport.
- Use extractor fans when cooking and when using the shower or bath, or install a shower dome.
- Stop draughts from windows and doors.
- In the evening, close curtains to hold in the warmth.
Why is an electric home a good thing?
Using electricity for heating and cooking is cost-effective. For example, heat pumps tend to be the most energy-efficient way to heat homes.
But what’s more, Aotearoa New Zealand’s electricity production is already 85% renewable. So the emissions associated with powering an electric home today will only get lower in the future.
