Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council, together with Hutt Science, are delighted to announce the successful completion of the highly anticipated STEMM Student Challenge 2023. This initiative, made possible with the support of both councils, demonstrates our shared commitment to fostering innovation and educational excellence within our wider Hutt Valley community.
The STEMM Student Challenge 2023 was held on 18 and 19 April and brought together students from 16 schools in Upper Hutt, 27 schools in Lower Hutt and 11 other schools from across Wellington. Over two days at Lower Hutt Town Hall, participating students exhibited their scientific knowledge, problem-solving skills and teamwork abilities, demonstrating their exceptional talent and dedication.
The competition, aligned with the New Zealand Science Curriculum and guided by Hutt Science's experienced educators, challenged students to tackle real-world scientific problems.
"We are immensely proud of all the students who participated," said Richard O’Sullivan, Hutt Science Branch Manager. "Their enthusiasm, dedication, and innovative solutions were truly impressive. This competition not only showcased their scientific capabilities but also fostered a love for STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), paving the way for their future success in diverse fields."
Upper Hutt City Council and Hutt City Council recognise the importance of investing in the education and development of our youth. This strategic investment aligns with the long-term plan of both councils.
"Hutt City Council is proud to support Hutt Science and its STEMM Student Challenge," said Andrea Blackshaw, Director of Neighbourhoods and Communities, Hutt City Council. "By nurturing scientific curiosity and critical thinking among our students, we are sowing the seeds for a brighter and more prosperous future. We believe that supporting programmes that empower our youth in the STEMM disciplines is essential for building a resilient and innovative community."
The integration of science education plays a crucial role in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the rapidly evolving world. By supporting Hutt Science, both councils aim to foster a passion for scientific exploration and discovery among local students, empowering them to become the future scientists, researchers, and innovators of our community.
"We are thrilled to partner with Hutt Science in enhancing science education opportunities for our local students," said Mike Ryan, Director of Community Services, Upper Hutt City Council. "By investing in this initiative, we are investing in the future of our community. We believe that a solid science curriculum is a key driver in preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities they will face in the years ahead.
Hutt Science, in collaboration with local schools and educators, offers a diverse range of science programmes, workshops and resources designed to complement and enrich the New Zealand Science Curriculum. Through hands-on experiments, interactive learning experiences, and real-world applications, students are actively engaged in the scientific process, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity.
The success of the STEMM Student Challenge exemplifies the remarkable potential that exists within our local schools and highlights the invaluable role that Hutt Science plays in unlocking that potential.
