Hutt City Council has joined with partners Earthlink and Waste Management to launch a new discount voucher trial at Silverstream Landfill transfer station.

From Wednesday 29 March, landfill transfer station users can save up to 50% on the cost of their visit by diverting recyclable and reusable items to the on-site drop-off points.

When residents bring a mix of general and recyclable waste to Silverstream’s transfer station between the hours of 10am - 3pm (seven days a week), their recycling can gain them an overall discount for their visit.

If the separated recycling is estimated to weigh 20kg or over, a minimum discount of 10% will be applied. The more recyclable and reusable items, the greater the total discount will be, capped at 50%.

Accepted recyclable materials and products include whiteware, metals, e-waste, household goods and some hazardous materials.

"This is part of our ongoing mission to have fewer recyclable products and materials going to landfill," said Alison Geddes, Director of Environment & Sustainability at Hutt City Council.

"Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt residents have shown that they want to reduce the amount of stuff going unnecessarily to a landfill, so it’s our job to ensure that they have the right opportunities and information to do so. Our education and incentive-driven campaign has so far included an updated bin-stickering system for our kerbside collection service, and a highly popular recycling board game. We’re looking forward to see how everyone gets on with this new discount voucher trial."

For situations where the entire load of waste consists of reusable and / or recyclable items, Hutt City Council recommends going directly to Earthlink at 25 Peterkin Street, Taita, Lower Hutt.

Note to editors:

Vouchers are valid for 30 minutes, and only one voucher can be used per visit. Discount vouchers are available seven days a week, but only between the hours of 10am to 3pm.

Silverstream Landfill is operated by Waste Management, and is located on Reynolds Bach Drive, Stokes Valley, Lower Hutt 5019.
