The election was conducted by postal voting using the First Past the Post electoral system, meaning that the candidate(s) with the most votes won.


What will you be voting for in Lower Hutt’s local government elections?*

All voters
  • 1 Mayor (4 candidates)
  • 5 Councillors to represent the entire city (12 candidates)
  • 3 Councillors for Greater Wellington Regional Council (8 candidates)
  • Referendum on whether to keep the Māori Ward for the 2028 election
  • Non-binding referendum on whether Hutt City Council should "explore amalgamation options with Wellington, Upper Hutt and Porirua City Councils, and the Greater Wellington Regional Council, which combine relevant services and functions, while keeping appropriate local services and decision-making local."
General roll voters only

Depending on where you live:

  • 1 Councillor to represent the Western Ward (2 candidates)
  • Northern Ward - no election - Andy Mitchell and Naomi Shaw elected unopposed
  • 2 Councillors to represent the Central Ward (7 candidates)
  • Harbour Ward - no election - Tui Lewis elected unopposed
  • Wainuiomata Ward - no election -  Keri Brown elected unopposed

Mana Kairangi ki Tai Māori Ward - no election -  Te Awa Puketapu elected unopposed
Eastern Bays and
Eastbourne voters only
Eastbourne Community Board - no election - Jeremy Chaston, Murray Gibbons, Ben Hainsworth, Emily Keddell and Bruce Spedding elected unopposed.
Wainuiomata voters only 6 members to represent the Wainuiomata Community Board (11 candidates)

You can enrol as a resident at any time if you:

  • are 18 years old (If you're 17 you can apply now. When you turn 18, you will be automatically enrolled and ready to vote)
  • are a New Zealand Citizen or permanent resident
  • have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more, at some point in your life

If you’re enrolled to vote in the parliamentary elections, you’re also automatically enrolled for Council elections.

The Māori Electoral Option allows Māori to choose between the Māori or general electoral roll. Visit Māori Electoral Option | Vote NZ

How to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer

If you own property in the Hutt but live elsewhere, you may be able to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer elector and vote in both areas. You can check your eligibility and enrol by visiting the ElectioNZ ratepayer enrolment portal or enrol using the form below:
