Hugh Sinclair Development

What's Happening?

We’re planning an exciting transformation of Hugh Sinclair Park.

Hugh Sinclair Park is nestled in Wainuiomata’s main commercial area, a rapidly evolving part of the suburb surrounded by new housing, retirement facilities and local businesses.

The upgrade will deliver a vibrant, accessible, and culturally connected public space that reflects what locals need and value.

This project builds on the recent Queen Street Town Centre upgrade and supports the wider Wainuiomata vision for connected, inclusive, and thriving community spaces.

We worked with local stakeholders, including Love Wainuiomata, Wainuiomata Marae, and residents of the neighbouring Masonic Village to produce a draft masterplan of the park's redevelopment. We then put it to the community, to get your feedback on the vision for the park.

You can find the masterplan here.

Initial community consultation took place in June and July 2025 to get feedback on the Masterplan for Hugh Sinclair Park. We shared this through a mixture of faceto-face discussions, social media, Wainuiomata News and an online feedback form where the community could share their thoughts.

We heard from 95 people through our survey, plus another 80 tamariki through LOVE Wainuiomata. Thank you for sharing your thoughts — overall, there’s strong support for the park redevelopment and lots of great ideas for features.

You told us you’d like to see:

  • A playground upgrade with spaces for all ages
  • An upgraded skatepark
  • Accessible and inclusive play areas
  • Better drainage, buggy-friendly paths, and lighting for increased safety at night
  • Shaded seating and BBQ areas
  • Fencing around play zones
  • Improved public toilets and more parking
  • A splash pad or water play area

What's Next?

Your feedback has given us a clear picture of what matters most to the Wainuiomata community and helped shape the framework for how Hugh Sinclair Park could develop over time.

The first stage will focus on the essentials — drainage improvements and upgrading the playground. Beyond that, future features will depend on Council decisions and the budgets available through the Long-Term Plan.

We also heard a lot of excitement from the community about a splash pad. Splash pads are becoming very popular as facilities, but the location of such features needs to be carefully considered in terms of accessibility, water-management, and potential vandalism.  For these reasons, we haven’t included it in the initial framework plan for Hugh Sinclair.

It’s something that we’re keen to explore for another near-by location in the future. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as opportunities develop.
