Improving Drainage to Keep Fields Playable
Hutt City Council is installing subsoil drainage systems at key sports fields to help prevent waterlogging and improve usability during the wet winter season. These upgrades will allow fields to dry faster and stay playable for longer periods, reducing disruptions to sports and recreation.
About the Project
The work involves placing perforated pipes in trenches backfilled with gravel, sand, and topsoil. These pipes help remove excess water from the field, directing it into the drainage system and then into a nearby stormwater drain. This means the fields will dry out faster and stay in better condition year-round.
What this means for you
Last year we completed drainage works at Naenae Park, Richard Prouse Park and Hutt Park. We're about to start our next round of work, installing drainage systems at Petone Recreation Ground, Te White Park and Frederick Wise Park.
From the beginning of October, an area of Petone Recreation Ground will be closed while work is underway. Parts of the park are open to the public, but for your safety, please steer clear of the construction zones and moving machinery. Physical works are expected to finish in November 2025, however the field will remain closed while the surface recovers. We expect to fully reopen the ground in January 2026, subject to weather.
