Bay Street public toilets upgrade

Work will soon be underway to replace the public toilets on Petone Esplanade, at the end of Bay Street, with a new accessible facility.

The existing toilets will be demolished in August to make way for a new facility that better meets the needs of our community. The design of this facility has been shaped by input from disability groups and service providers, including Wheels and Canes, CCS Disability Action, Idea Services and Mash Trust.

Overall site plan for the Bay Street toilet upgrade

Timeline

The new facility will be built off-site before being transported to Petone for installation. Installation is expected to begin in October and take up to one month to complete.During this time, the nearest public toilets will be at the Petone Settlers Museum.

The new facility will include:

  • Four public toilet cubicles, two standard and two accessible.
  • A high needs disability changing room with a height-adjustable change table, hoist, shower and toilet.
  • Two accessible car parks.
  • An outdoor shower.
  • A drinking fountain.
  • Bike racks.
  • New garden beds and landscaping.

Access to the changing room

The standard and accessible toilets will be open to the public. However, the high-needs disability changing room will be locked and accessed by PIN code. This is to help protect the specialist equipment from vandalism or damage, and make sure the space is in good condition for people who need it.

The PIN code will be made available to local users through existing Council networks and health providers. We are also working through the best way to support people visiting from out of town who may need access. Information about accessing the room will be available on site.

This is a new approach for us, and we will review how the access system is working. If changes are needed, we will look at other options.

What other works are happening in Petone?

This project is one of the upgrade’s we’re making along the Petone waterfront. With Te Ara Tupua and Tupua Horo Nuku complete and more people expected to walk and cycle along the Petone waterfront, we've been carrying out improvement and maintenance works to the existing shared path along waterfront in Petone, helping to create a continuous walking and cycling network around the Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington Harbour.
