Petone Shared Path Improvements

With Te Ara Tupua and Tupua Horo Nuku complete and more people expected to walk and cycle along the Petone waterfront, we've been carrying out improvement and maintenance works to the existing shared path along waterfront in Petone, helping to create a continuous walking and cycling network around the Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington Harbour.

What we’re doing

Work along the Petone waterfront has included widening and resurfacing sections of the shared path to better accommodate higher volumes of cyclists and pedestrians. Where possible we've widened the path to at least 2.4m.

Improvements will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption. Some sections of the path may need to be partially closed, but detours will be provided wherever possible to maintain access, please follow the signage on site.

Completed sections of shared path so far include Hīkoikoi Reserve (Waione Bridge to Lions Park and west of Petone Wharf

What else?

Along the Petone waterfront and surrounding area we are also:

  • Removing or relocating bollards, removing some vegetation, relocating rubbish bins, relocating or removing seats, and removing steps from the path.
  • Upgrading the Bay Street Public Toilets and their surrounds – this work is expected to take place later in 2026.
  • Putting in a new Locky Dock – installation to be timed with work on the Bay Street Public Toilets.

We’re also making improvements to an area west of Waione Bridge, creating a rest area and better connection to the Hutt River Trail. Find out more about this work at Hīkoikoi Landing.

We continue to investigate the route through Seaview to ensure the connection to the north end of Tupua Horo Nuku is safe for cyclists of all skill levels as well as pedestrians.
