When you apply for a role with us, you'll need to complete a short online application form. You'll be asked to provide information such as your contact details, the types of roles you're interested in, the level of experience you have, your salary expectations, if you've had any criminal convictions, and to confirm that you have the right to work in New Zealand.

Covering letter
Including a covering letter with your application is recommended. Your cover letter should highlight how your skills and experience relate to the role you're applying for.
CV
Your CV should be up to date and include each role you've held, the dates and a summary of responsibilities and key achievements you're particularly proud of.
Once you've applied for a job with us online, you'll receive an email acknowledging that we've received your application. Please note the job's closing date, as this will give you an indication of when we'll start reviewing all applications against the job requirements and when you might next hear from us.
Once you've set up your user account you can access this at any time to update your profile details and resume, and track your job application status.
Shortlisting
If you've been unsuccessful with your application, you'll be advised by email.
If you've been shortlisted, we'll contact you to advise of the next steps which may involve an initial phone interview, video interview and/or a formal interview.
Interview
At your interview you'll hear more about the position and will be asked questions about your relevant skills and experience, along with some behavioural questions to help us understand how you work.
When answering behavioural based questions, you may find the STAR technique useful:
- Situation - describe the situation
- Task - describe what you had to achieve
- Action - describe the steps you took
- Result - describe what the outcome was
The interview is also a great opportunity for you to find out whether Hutt City Council is the right organisation for you. We'll ensure you have the opportunity to ask any questions of us too.
Assessments and reference checking
Following your interview, we'll let you know if you'll be progressing to the next stage of our process which will include reference and background checking and for some of our roles, we may need you to complete an ability assessment and/or a personality questionnaire.
We also may ask you to complete an assessment exercise such as a work sample or a presentation.
We will brief you on all the details of these assessments and checks before we ask you to complete them.
Pre-employment checks
We may need you to complete some pre-employment checks such as a drug and alcohol check and/or police vetting. We will discuss the requirements around pre-employment checks with you if these are required.
Offer of employment
If you're successful in being offered the role you've applied for, we will be in touch and then follow up with a written offer.
If you weren't successful, we will let you know as soon as possible and will be happy to provide you with feedback.
