What is the City Link Bridge?
The City Link Bridge is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge that will connect the relocated Melling train station directly with Lower Hutt city centre.
As part of Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi, the bridge will support easier movement, bring more people into the city centre, and help reconnect the river with everyday life.
Benefits
The City Link Bridge will:
- provide a safe and direct walking and cycling route between Margaret St and the new Melling train station
- support increased use of public transport
- build a stronger connection between the city and our river
- encourage more people to visit and spend time in the city centre
Our goal is to deliver a bridge the city can be proud of, while providing good value for our ratepayers.
What's happening now?
We are currently working through the Design and Build tender process. We are working to towards the following timeline:
- November 2026 - Design and build contract awarded
- Early-mid 2027 – Detailed design
- From mid-2027 – Bridge construction starts
- Early 2029 – Bridge opens, along with the relocated Melling train station
Timeframes may change as the project progresses. We'll update this page as the project progresses and further details will be shared as work stages are confirmed.
What else is happening?
Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi is a transformational programme of work for our city. It brings together flood protection, river restoration, transport upgrades, a new pedestrian and cycling bridge and city centre revitalisation.
The programme is a partnership between iwi Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Greater Wellington, Hutt City Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
