Boulcott Memorial Project

We're updating the Boulcott Memorial site at the corner of High Street and Military Road to better reflect the history and different perspectives connected to the Battle of Boulcott’s Farm.

The existing memorial will remain in place, with new features providing more context about this significant event in our local history.

Council is working closely with Mana Whenua, the Boulcott family and local artists to develop the design.

About the project

The project follows research by Victoria University of Wellington exploring Māori and Pākehā perspectives on the Battle of Boulcott’s Farm, which took place in 1846 during the New Zealand Wars.

The research identified support for retaining the existing memorial while providing more historical context and recognising a broader range of perspectives.
