Help to vote

If you’re physically impaired, unable to read or write or are not familiar with the language on the form, you may need help to vote. You can authorise someone you trust to mark the voting document for you following your instructions.

Telephone dictation service

A confidential and secure telephone dictation voting service is available through our elections provider ElectioNZ for eligible disabled voters who may face barriers to voting independently.

The eligibility criteria is set out in the Local Electoral Amendment Regulations 2023. You may be eligible to use the telephone dictation service if it is not possible or practicable for you to cast an ordinary vote without hardship or undue inconvenience due to:

  • Being blind
  • Having a vision impairment that prevents you from marking your voting document without assistance
  • Having another physical disability that prevents you from marking your voting document without assistance

The telephone dictation service is available for eligible disabled voters on weekdays between 9am - 4:30pm, from 9 September - 10 October 2025.

Contact the dedicated call centre on 0800 666 040 to request access to this service. Your eligibility will be assessed first, and if approved, you can dictate your vote in the same phone call.

Make sure you’re ready to vote before calling, to help ensure an efficient process.
