What is the Daly Street Redevelopment?
The Daly Street Redevelopment is an opportunity to create a lively new area in the heart of the city, connecting central Lower Hutt with Te Awa Kairangi and the river promenade.
Council has acquired land at Daly Street to support urban regeneration and help deliver the objectives of the City Centre Framework and Sustainable Growth Strategy. The redevelopment project aims to better integrate the city with the Te Awa Kairangi promenade and “enhance the heart of the city”.
The vision is to create a vibrant mixed-use development with river-facing buildings, cafes and restaurants opening onto the promenade, and offices and residential apartments above.
Benefits for the city
The redevelopment will help create:
- a place for people to live and work in the city centre.
- a new destination for dining, leisure and enjoying the Riverside Park.
- a stronger link between the city centre and Te Awa Kairangi.
- a catalyst for further investment and redevelopment in the city centre.
What's happening now?
Council is currently preparing a Design Brief for the site. We plan to invite Registrations of Interest from prospective development partners in October 2026.
What else is happening?
Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi is a transformational programme of work for our city. It brings together flood protection, river restoration, transport upgrades, a new pedestrian and cycling bridge and city centre revitalisation.
The programme is a partnership between iwi Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Greater Wellington, Hutt City Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
