Noise control at events

To help everyone enjoy a peaceful and respectful environment, here's our advice around noise control:

What Is Excessive Noise?

Excessive event noise is any sound that unreasonably interferes with the peace, comfort, or convenience of others. This can include:

  • Loud music
  • Live performances
  • Any amplified sound
  • Construction or machinery noise during restricted hours

Time-Based Restrictions,

For clarification, please contact one of Council’s Consents Officers on 04 570 6666 to confirm if the activity meets the rule, otherwise a resource consent may be required.

What Happens If There’s a Complaint?

  1. Noise Control Officers may respond to complaints 24/7.
  2. They can issue Excessive Noise Direction Notices requiring the noise to stop.
  3. If the noise continues, they can seize equipment (e.g. speakers).
  4. Offenders may face fines or prosecution.

Let’s Be Good Neighbours

We encourage event organisers to:

  • Talk to businesses and residents in the immediate area and let them know what is happening.
  • Be aware of your noise limits and be able to measure your noise from the nearest residential / business boundary.
