About the Christmas Event Support Fund

The Christmas Event Support Fund provides financial support for community events and activities that bring people together to celebrate the festive season across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt.

Through this fund, Council aims to support festive events that strengthen community connections, activate neighbourhoods, and contribute to a vibrant city over the holiday period.


Funding is prioritised for events that:

  • embrace manaakitanga through hospitality, kindness and community connection
  • are whānau-friendly, inclusive and accessible (not intended for private, invite only or closed audience events)
  • support local businesses, artists and community organisations
  • activate neighbourhoods, venues and public spaces
  • are creative, engaging and highly visible
  • create positive outcomes for the community
  • demonstrate environmentally sustainable practices

What we’re offering

  • funding of up to $3,000 + GST
  • event planning advice from Council officers
  • marketing support to help promote their event as part of our Summer in the Hutt campaign

Please read the information below before submitting your application:

To be considered for the Christmas Event Support Fund, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Your event must be held in a venue or public space in Lower Hutt
  • Your organisation must be based in Lower Hutt
  • Applications must be received before the advertised closing date
  • A comprehensive event description must be provided in your application - show that you have a clear plan, budget and delivery team
  • An itemised event budget must be added to your application
  • Funding will be prioritised for essential items, discretionary elements may not be supported
  • Events already funded through other Council funding streams may not be eligible

Successful applicants must:

  • use funds only for the approved purpose and in line with any terms and conditions we've set
  • use the grant during December of the year it is received and only for the purpose stated in the application
  • complete a Post Event Report by 31 January outlining how the funding was used, how the community benefited and how the event met its objectives
  • let Council’s funding officer know immediately if any difficulty or potential difficulty arises that may compromise the service or project
  • allow us to audit the use of the funds if we decide to
  • recognise our support in all publicity material, annual reports and similar publications
  • return the unspent amount of the grant funds along with an Accountability Report to account for the grant money you have spent.
  • lay a complaint with Police if any funds are stolen or misappropriated, and then notify us
  • events must be smoke and vape free and commit to environmentally sustainable practices
  • events must comply with all relevant Council requirements (e.g. Health and Safety, Regional Waste Minimisation Bylaw)

  • Food and drinks
  • Purchase of equipment for private or organisation ownership
  • Uniforms, costumes and decorations
  • Facility development or capital works
  • Travel, vehicle and accommodation costs
  • Administration costs, wages, fees
  • Events that are primarily intended for a private, invited or closed audience, rather than being open to the wider community
  • Workshops, programmes or multi-session activities that require participant registration rather than being open community events
  • Events that may conflict with another event supported by Council
  • Items or services that have already been paid for
