Some events may need a traffic management plan (TMP) to keep people safe and manage any impact on the road network. This could involve event signage, reduced speed limits (such as 30km/h), coned-off parking or full road closures.
When a TMP Might Be Needed
You may need a traffic management plan if:
- Your event is near busy roads and have children attending
- You want to reserve car parks for event use
- You need to temporarily block or close a road
- Every event is different, so the best approach is to check early.
Getting Started
All TMPs must be prepared by a qualified Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS), and traffic control must be delivered by trained professionals. Charges will apply once you engage with a traffic company.
If your event involves a full road closure, plan ahead as it can take up to 4 months to process due to legal and notification timelines.
What You’ll Need
For any event affecting the road, footpath, berm or on-street parking, you will likely need:
- A Corridor Access Request (CAR): This is a permit to use public road space.
- A Traffic Management Plan (TMP): This outlines how you’ll keep everyone safe during your event.
Costs to Consider
Typical costs may include:
- TMP preparation by a traffic company
- Council admin fees for processing the CAR and TMP
- Advertising road closures in newspapers (if required)
- On-the-day traffic management staff and equipment
