On Friday 18 February at 7:30am Konga Reriti, along with other representatives from Te Āti Awa Taranaki Whānui, lead the Te Huringa o Papatūānuku for Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade to bless the space before work begins in March.

Alicia Moeahu lead the Karanga, the ancestral call to commence the process, signifying the weaving together of the people and the place with the purpose.

The ancestral call is akin to the cries of a mother giving birth, in that it is through her cries that her child is ushered into this world.

Following the blessing Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry and Linda Oslen from Wainuiomata Marae turned the soil together on the grass in front of the Wainuiomata Memorial Hall.

You can view a livestream of the morning on Facebook.

The Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade is now due to start from 21 March. Some crucial parts of the paving have been delayed overseas due to global shipping impacts from COVID-19.
