Hutt City Council has today agreed to progress with a project to restore and reopen a section of the iconic Petone Wharf.

The 116-year-old wharf, closed since 2021 due to storm and earthquake damage, will undergo partial remediation — preserving a major section of the structure while ensuring the project stays within the $12 million Long Term Plan budget.

In May 2024, Council commissioned an independent report by structural engineer Adam Thornton to assess the viability of three options: full restoration, partial remediation, or demolition.

The resulting report and cost analysis were shared widely, with feedback sought from the Petone Community Board, the Pito One Projects Steering Group, and community campaigners.

With affordability challenges and community sentiment at the heart of it all, partial remediation, which involved pulling down a portion of the wharf head that was in “particularly poor condition” and fortifying the rest, was identified as the most feasible.

With a direction now set, Council officers have begun pre-consent discussions with regulatory authorities to develop tender documentation to seek confirmed pricing for the works.

Pending consent approvals, remediation work on the approach could be underway in 2026.
