Red Wind Warning 23 October 25

A Red Wind Warning has been issued for Thursday, 23 October, 7am to 7pm

Update:  3:55PM 23/10/25

  • Wainuiomata Hill Road is now open. Conditions are marginal - extreme care must be taken while driving over the hill.
  • Wainuiomata Hub is now open for people needing emergency shelter, information, or a cup of tea. It will be open until 5pm.
  • Severe gales with damaging gusts of greater than 140km/h in exposed places
  • Power outages have already been happening across the region and there may be more as severe weather picks up
  • Our contractors and response teams are prepared and will be monitoring the situation
  • A ban on all open-air fires and fireworks is in place in our region until 8am on Monday 27 October

Please note, some of our services and facilities are impacted.

  • Moerā Neighbourhood Hub is closed and War Memorial Library will be closing early at 5pm.
  • All sportsgrounds are closed.
  • Pools:
    • Huia Pool + Fitness -  closed from 12pm
    • Stokes Valley Pool + Fitness - closed from 12pm
    • Te Ngaengae Pool + FItness - closed from 5pm

What should you do?

  • Avoid unnecessary travel. If you have to travel, please check your routes and public transport options beforehand. Be prepared for disruptions in transport. Take care when driving on the roads, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
  • Bin day? If you can wait until your next collection, avoid bringing it out to the kerb and keep it tucked away from those strong gusts.
  • Tie down trampolines or other loose items
  • Make a plan if you lose power. If you rely on electricity for a medical device, reach out to your healthcare and electricity provider and arrange a back-up power supply or contingency plan
  • Check on your neighbours, friends and whānau.
  • When indoors during strong winds, it is important to stay away from windows and doors.
  • Clear stormwater drains to help prevent surface flooding
  • Create an evacuation plan and have a grab bag ready to go
  • Make a plan for your pets and/or livestock
  • Listen to the radio or keep an eye on our Facebook for the latest updates
