Lower Hutt is rolling out the welcome mat this September with Welcoming Week – Te Wiki o Manaaki (5–14 September 2025), a celebration of community, connection, and belonging.

The week-long programme features a diverse line-up of creative, cultural, and wellbeing activities designed by and with our local communities. From arts workshops at Naenae and War Memorial Libraries, to multicultural sports, playgroups, and wellbeing events across the city, there’s something for everyone.

This celebration of diversity comes as Hutt City Council is recognised nationally for its ongoing work to make Lower Hutt a welcoming place for all. The Council has achieved Stage 1 accreditation under Immigration New Zealand’s Welcoming Communities – Te Waharoa ki ngā Hapori programme.

The accreditation acknowledges Council’s partnerships with mana whenua and the city’s diverse ethnic communities, and its work to foster a safe, inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Mayor Barry says the accreditation reinforces what Welcoming Week is all about.

“This accreditation shows the value of our partnerships and the work we’re doing to make sure everyone who chooses to make Lower Hutt their home feels they belong and can fully participate in our community.”

Immigration New Zealand commended Hutt City for initiatives that connect communities and create lasting impact — from supporting ethnic groups to engage in civic life for the first time, to co-designing inclusive events that reflect the city’s cultural richness.
