There's no need to leave Lower Hutt to celebrate Matariki this year, with a packed programme of events bringing people together across the city throughout July.

From dawn celebrations and marae open days to performances, crafts and community gatherings, there's something for everyone this Matariki. Highlights include:

  • Community Matariki Event & Open Day, Te Mangungu Marae, 4 July
  • Ko Puanga rāua ko Matariki – Waitī, Petone Foreshore, 9 July
  • Ko Puanga rāua ko Matariki – Waitī, Wainuiomata Community Hall, 10 July
  • Matariki @ Petone Community House dawn celebration, 10 July
  • Matariki Community Celebration: Ngā Whetū o Matariki, Wainuiomata High School, 10 July

Lower Hutt Mayor Ken Laban says the programme offers something for everyone while celebrating the significance of Matariki.

"We're incredibly fortunate to have such a rich and diverse programme of events happening right here in Lower Hutt. Matariki is a special time to come together, reflect on the year that's been, celebrate the present and look ahead with hope.

"Whether you're attending a dawn event, visiting a marae or taking part in a community celebration, it's a great opportunity for whānau to come together, learn more about Matariki and enjoy the many events on offer.”

Matariki marks the Māori New Year and begins with the reappearance of the Matariki star cluster in the winter sky. It is a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and look ahead to the future.

People can explore the full programme of Matariki events here. Alongside major community celebrations, Council's Neighbourhood Hubs are hosting a range of family-friendly activities during the school holidays.

It's a chance to celebrate, reflect and connect with whānau, friends and community.
