Around 1200 competitors will head to Lower Hutt on Sunday 20 September for the Hutt Half Marathon and Walk, boosting local spending.

The races start and finish at the Petone Rugby League Clubrooms at Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone.

About 65% of this year’s competitors are coming from outside Lower Hutt including a smattering from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands and France.

Many competitors will also bring family and supporters.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ken Laban says events like the Hutt Half Marathon show why Council’s Events Strategy has a strong focus on attracting events people want to travel for.

“Events like this bring people into Lower Hutt and put money into our local economy. When visitors grab breakfast, have lunch, shop locally or stay the night, our businesses benefit.

“Our Events Strategy is about attracting events that give people a reason to come here, enjoy our city and spend time in our communities.”

There is something for almost everyone at the Hutt Half Marathon, from the half marathon and 10km events to a 5km fun run and walk and the Cool Kids Kilometre.

The courses are flat and scenic, making the event accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities.

This year, the half marathon will feature a new route incorporating Tupua Horo Nuku, giving competitors the opportunity to run along the stunning shared path and take in some of the best of Lower Hutt’s coastline.

Hutt Half Marathon Race Director Paul Strickland says the event continues to grow in popularity.

“Every year we’re seeing more people discover the event, including more runners and walkers travelling into Lower Hutt to take part.

“You don’t need to be an experienced runner. We have children, adults, walkers and runners involved. For some, it’s about winning or posting a personal best.  For others it’s about getting out there, having a go and enjoying the day.”
