Weather update – Recovery and clean-up underway

All weather warnings for Lower Hutt have now been lifted. While conditions have improved, the ground remains saturated and there is still a risk of landslips, surface flooding and debris, particularly if further rain falls.

Please continue to:

  • Take care when travelling around the city and during clean-up.
  • Avoid unstable slopes, slip areas and damaged roads or tracks.
  • Be cautious around pooled water, mud and silt, which may be contaminated.
  • Follow advice from Hutt City Council and MetService.

Our crews will continue working across the city as clean-up and recovery efforts continue.

Facilities and tracks

  • Council facilities are open and operating as usual.
  • Please take extra care on tracks and trails, where unstable ground and fallen trees may still be present.

Landslips

Although the heavy rainfall has passed, the risk of landslips remains.

Watch for signs such as:

  • Small slips, rock falls or ground movement.
  • New cracks or bulges in the ground, roads, footpaths or retaining walls.
  • Tilting trees, fences or retaining walls.
  • Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close.
  • Steps, decks or verandas moving away from your house.

If you notice any of these warning signs, move to a safe location and report slips affecting public areas to Council on 04 570 6666. If there is an immediate threat to life, call 111.

For more information about landslips, visit our landslips webpage or the Earth Sciences New Zealand website.

  • Emergency: Call 111 if there is an immediate threat to life or property.
  • Power outages or fallen power lines: Wellington Electricity.
  • Wastewater issues: Wellington Water.
  • Roads, footpaths, public spaces or streetlights: Hutt City Council.

If your home or property has been affected, contact your insurer as soon as possible for advice and support with clean-up and insurance claims.

We have started to see some impacts from the weather warnings today, including power outages, flights and ferries cancelled, and reports of trees downs and roofs lifting.

We actively monitoring the situation. Please continue to follow their channels for local updates.

Remember:

⚠️ Take extra care when walking, cycling, or driving, especially if you're riding a motorcycle or driving a high-sided vehicle.

🌊 Coastal roads may be affected by high swells. Please drive carefully and plan ahead.

🌳 Avoid using bush tracks and reserves where possible until the weather settles

🏠 Secure outdoor items such as wheelie bins, trampolines, and outdoor furniture that could be blown around.

♻️ If your rubbish bin isn't full, consider waiting until your next collection or putting it out on the morning of collection rather than the night before. If you do need to put it out, use a wheelie bin clip.
