Veteran burials

Hutt City is proud to honour the service of the veteran community. Find out how veteran burials work.

Taitā Cemetery & Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance

There are Services Cemeteries for Returned Service People at Taitā Cemetery, on Kowhai St, Naenae and the Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance, on 164 Hine Road, Wainuiomata.

You also have the option for memorial-only plots in cases where there is no burial.

RSA burial plots and Ashes Wall

The Returning Services Association (RSA) sections of Taitā cemetery are for body and ash burials. The Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance only has ash plots available.

To be buried in a Services Cemetery you must have served as a member of His Majesty's Forces on certain deployments, or be the spouse or partner of someone who has. You can only use Bronze plaques and/or headstones in these areas.

Please contact Veteran's Affairs to confirm eligibility regarding acquiring an RSA plot.

Ash scattering

You cannot scatter ashes in any cemetery or Council facility, including garden areas, lawns and streams.

This policy has been made out of respect for the wishes of Tangata Whenua and environmental reasons.
