About the Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance
The Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance was established in 2004 by the Hutt City Council to provide a dedicated and peaceful place for ash burials in the valley. It was designed as a modern complement to the historic Sinclair Cemetery, which sits nearby and dates back to the mid-1800s.
While Sinclair Cemetery holds many of Wainuiomata’s earliest settlers, the Garden of Remembrance represents a continuation of that story, offering families a respectful setting for loved ones in the present day.
The Wainuiomata Garden of Remembrance is for ash burials only.
Ash scattering
You cannot scatter ashes in any cemetery or Council facility, including garden areas, lawns and streams.
This policy has been made out of respect for the wishes of Tangata Whenua and environmental reasons.
Purchasing a plot
Blocks F & G were recently installed in the newest extension, and each plot can hold two urns.
Plots are sold consecutively, and more plots can be added if there's a high demand.
Note: Plots can’t be pre-purchased.
Booking an ash interment
A funeral director should be your first point of call if you’re arranging a funeral.
All body burial bookings must be arranged by a funeral director. Body burials are only available as additional interments into existing body burial plots.
Ash interments can be arranged without a funeral director. If you do not have an existing plot please fill out an Application to lease a plot and we will get in contact with you. Once your plot is confirmed you can book the ash interment.
