Paying for parking

Find out how much parking costs and ways to pay in Lower Hutt.

Ways you can pay for parking

Parking meters operate between 9am and 5pm, seven days a week (excluding public holidays),

You can pay:

  • with coins or by credit card.
  • through the PayMyPark website or app - pay for parking from your smartphone and extend your time remotely.

From 8 April 2024, the 50-cent fee charged when credit and debit cards are used on Hutt City Council-run parking meters will be waived. This is to align with the Retail Payment System Act 2022 (the Act) and the Commerce Commission’s recent guidelines.

There will continue to be no fee when paying with cash at parking meters that provide this option.

Parking paid for via the PayMyPark would still attract a fee. This fee is charged by a third party and does not go to Hutt City Council.

The Council will regularly review its parking credit card surcharge.

When you use the app to pay for parking, make sure you choose HCC in the app. If you accidentally pay for parking outside of Lower Hutt, you will get a parking ticket.

Pay By Plate parking is a paperless system that works by using your vehicle's licence plate number to record your parking time and payment.

To pay for parking, simply enter your vehicle's licence plate number at the parking meter and pay for the amount of time you want to park. You won't receive a paper ticket, so you don't need to go back to your car once you've paid.

Our parking officers will use your licence plate number to confirm that your vehicle has a valid parking session.

Parking receipts are now paperless.

The parking meter will ask you if you would like a receipt, if you select YES it will display a four-digit code and the eReceipt website you can download it from.

You can choose to register your email address so that all future receipts and transaction details for that vehicle plate number will be sent to your email address. You'll need to use a four-digit receipt code from a parking session when you set this up.

Note: If you don't get your four-digit code, you can email us to ask for a copy of the receipt. You'll need to tell us:

  • your car registration
  • the street you were parked on
  • the time you parked
  • your name and email.
